LIZZIE DOMINGUEZ

"What's the need for music when you can have Zelda?"
Why don't you introduce yourself?
My name's Elizabeth Dominguez, but please call me Lizzie. I teach Basic and Advance Algebra, although I'm completely qualified for classes all the way up to Calculus and other applied math. I also collaborate with the Mathletes and, if we get enough people, hopefully we'll get into districts this year. Who knows?
How long have you been in Arcadia Hills? Do you like Arcadia Hills?
I've only recently moved to Arcadia, probably less than a year ago? It's quite different from what I know, but I really like it. You see, I grew up in Seattle and a town near St. Louis because of my parents researching jobs, and moving between Sophomore year from city to city wasn't the... best of moves. Anyways, I never had the small-town feel but it's so comfortable here! I can't wait to get to know the kids here.
How long have you been teaching?
I spent 2 years assistant teaching at Washington University back in St Louis and a year at the local high school there as well... so... This will be my second year teaching Algebra.
What do you like to do when you're not at the school?
I'm married, so I like to spend a lot of time with my husband. We like to travel a lot, and he loves cooking. Other than that, I study up germanic languages (it's a heritage thing) and we create a bunch of things, from hand-made washing machines to stationary to costumes. We also play a lot of video games and listen to a lot of music.
Do you see potential in these students? Are they the future of America?
Of course! And I want to help them develop those brilliant, little talents and skills they hold so they can bloom and blossom.
What is the hardest lesson you've ever had to learn?
That's a tough one... I think the hardest lesson I've ever learned would be trying to fit in. It was extremely difficult to get to know people and regrow when I switched schools, especially in high school. On top of being the new kid, I was the kid who wore thick glasses, listened to weird music, had the autistic sister, and I was extremely passionate in math. Not the best combination when it came to talking to kids. But you learn to accept yourself and learn that there's a bigger world out there.
You also learn to not quote Star Wars the first time you meet somebody.
Thank you for your time. I'm glad we had the time to sit down and talk.
Thank you for the invitation. It was fun!
